A niche market is a focused and targetable portion of a market. By definition a business that focuses on a niche market addresses a need for a product or service that is not being addressed by major providers. You can also think of a niche market as a narrowly defined group of potential customers.

For instance, instead of offering dog training, you might establish a niche market by specializing in labrador retriever training.

Why should you bother to establish a niche market? Because of the great advantage of being alone there; other small businesses may not be aware of your particular niche market, and large businesses won’t want to bother with it.

The trick to capitalizing on a niche market is to find or develop a market niche that has customers who are accessible, that is growing fast enough, and that is not owned by one established seller already.

Establishing a niche market give you the opportunity to provide products and services to a group that other businesses have overlooked.

By seeking out smaller segments of larger markets, a website and product can be developed and promoted quickly to uniquely serve a targeted and usually loyal customer base, giving a regular income stream. This technique is then repeated across several other niche websites until a desired income level is achieved.

Sadly there are still many niche marketers that don’t make money…

Their desperation is mostly something like this, “I have a site and I’ve been promoting it for a while but I’m not making any sales. What am I doing wrong?”

Niche market should be profitable, shouldn’t it? So what’s wrong? Then why aren’t they making any sales?

Unfortunately that’s the case if you’re rich and can afford such a campaign, which many of us can’t at this time.

So what if you’re a nobody and have no money?

Simply create and sell product that solves a problem that people will pay to have the solution to. Or in short, sell to desperate buyers!

My family and I, as well as my friends have our regular favorite places to have these all-you-can-eat brunch. We usually have brunch together 1-2 times a month. Just today we broke our habit of going to our regular restaurant and try a new one just because of an advertisement. This advertisement is very simple but very intriguing: Wagyu Beef All-You-Can-Eat Buffet Sunday Brunch for $20 per person (including beverages).

Wagyu (和牛, wagyū) refers to several breeds of cattle genetically predisposed to intense marbling and to producing a high percentage of oleaginous unsaturated fat. Also known as Kobe-style beef, the meat from Wagyu cattle is known worldwide for its marbling characteristics, increased eating quality through a naturally enhanced flavor, tenderness and juiciness, and thus a high market value. Grocery stores in the United States will sell cuts of American Wagyu for $40/lb to $150/lb. (Quoted from Wikipedia.)

Wagyu beef is usually very expensive. I ate it before at one fine dining steak restaurant in Jakarta for more than $195 per portion. It tasted very good, the meat was so juicy and tender that it melted in my mouth.

Hence after I read that brunch advertisement, I called that restaurant and made reservation for 10 people. Oh yes, I invited my eating friends to try, too. There were Wagyu beef burger, Wagyu beef tataki, Wagyu beef carpacio, Wagyu roast beef, minestrone soup with Wagyu beef ball, and many other Wagyu beef cuisines in addition to sushi, sashimi, seafood, salad and dessert bar.

Coincidentally I met my friend’s brother in-law with his group of friends there. They also went to this restaurant because of the Wagyu beef all-you-can-eat buffet Sunday brunch (Although the restaurant is a 5-star hotel’s coffee shop, we would never have regular all-you-can-eat brunch there).

Granted although the quality of the Wagyu beef was not the top one, one of my friends planned to have brunch there again next Sunday with his families. Another friend planned to invite his clients having brunch there.

This restaurant creates a buzz, repetitive customers and viral references with its long tail niche. It also has competitive edge among its competitors: it’s the only restaurant in Jakarta that offers all-you-can-eat Wagyu beef!

The very same thing applies in Internet marketing! You must have a long tail niche to dominate your competitors. However there may be slight problems with long tail niche:

1. That they often don’t get enough traffic, and
2. They are so specific that even if you can drive traffic, there isn’t much you can do to serve those people except show them ads. Again this can be profitable if you know how to do it but it seems like there just has to be an easier way…
