Stumble Upon Free Traffic – Part 2 – Comment For A Stumble

When I posted my review about my Stumble Upon free traffic generation strategy, Hammer posted his comment that my strategy is ineffective.

This is what he wrote:

This is a very ineffective way to use StumbleUpon and if you only got 193 unique visits you need to rethink your strategy. I consistently get a couple thousand hits a day from SU and have gotten as high as 10,000 hits in one day to certain posts.

Feeling very curious about what I did wrong, I email him and asked how he did it. He’s very kind to share me this fact:

Hi Aldian,

The important thing to remember about SU is that your stumbles or the stumbles of others won’t achieve much unless you or they are popular stumblers.

Here’s what I recommend. First, spend some time adding friends and be sure they do a lot of Stumbling. You are limited to adding 200 friends, so make them count. Also check to see how many friends they have already. If they have 200 or close to it, they won’t be able to befriend you back. As you begin adding quality friends, some of they will make you a friend as well. There is no limit to how many people can befriend you and over time, hopefully lots of people will make you their friend. The more friends you have, the more effective your own stumbles will be.

Second, do a lot of stumbling. Spend some time stumbling and giving a thumbs up to lots of sites each day. It’s also good to find things to stumble that haven’t been stumbled before. Anytime you are surfing and find a site or page you like, give it a thumbs up.

Once you’ve been doing some stumbling and added plenty of friends and have 20 or so fans, (people that have added you as a friend), then you can start stumbling your own posts. Posts that are interesting to lots of people will get thumbed up by others once you start the process and if eough people stumble your posts, they can get hundreds and thousands of hits a day. I’ve got posts that were stumbled weeks ago that are still getting thumbed up and then start banging all over again.

So I redo my strategy, and inspired by RJ’s Comment For A Stumble, I’m doing this experiment.

Here goes:

Leave a comment in this post with a link you want stumbled. You will also get a valid back link to your sites because I use Do-Follow plugin, in addition to I stumble your sites. Off course, I reserve the right to not stumble something that I personally find offensive or consider as nothing more than spam. I also prefer to stumble stories that have never been stumbled before :)

You can check my Stumble Upon page to see if I stumbled yours. You can also use Terence Chang’s one-click trick to know if you’re really stumbled.

I think it is important to be active in any community you are in. The same thought process can be applied to digg or any other bookmarking community. Even blog catalog or mybloglog, if you aren’t active and don’t participate you won’t go anywhere.

If you love me you’ll stumble me. Make me feel loved! :-)

On a more serious note, the bottom line is that content is king. If your content is really good people will thumb it up, but if not most people will simply hit the Stumble button again and move on.

More importantly, you need to know what stumblers like. Check the main StumbleUpon page and look at the tags. Notice that the most popular tags are usually humor, photography, home, politics and videos. Create a post that falls in line with one of these niches, then when you stumble it, make sure the topic you choose contains the same word (e.g. if your post is humor related, use humor for the topic).

You can of course network as your friend suggested, but this will prove to be an easier approach for you, especially if you’re just getting started. It’s a matter of knowing human behavior and adapting your blog posts to give stumblers what they want.

    Hi!

A comment for a Stumble? Sounds like a great deal to me!

I could use some more traffic on this post: http://bethanyharvey.com/blog/posts/2007/07/got-your-gay-agenda-right-here/

    Don’t feel obligated, of course!

Also, what plugin do you use to allow commenters to edit their comments for 10 minutes? I’d love to have something like that on my blog, if you don’t mind sharing how you did it!

  8. MyAvatars 0.2

Wow Christo, shark fishing! That’s extremely extreme fishing. Great articles. Stumbled ;)

Hey Bethany, I like your wilderness photos there. Tortoise, vulture skulls… I gave thumb up.

WP AJAX Edit Comments is what you need to allow your commenters to edit their comments. You can set it any period of time you want.

You can also find other useful plugins that I use in my Resources Page.

No one cares about being deceitful anymore?

Why not just honestly participate on SU and stumble only good sites that you think deserve it. Add a stumble button to your own site, and let it all flow out?

If you are honest, then good things will happen for you. If you are deceitful, what do you really expect?

Great post on Google Refferal 2.0.

You just need to complete it with how to get Google Refferal 2.0 :)
    - Login to your AdSense
    - Click AdSense Setup tab

Apparently it’s not available to every AdSense account yet. I myself doesn’t have this option yet.

I hope Google with add it to my account this month :)

    Hi Aldian,

I’m really enjoying nosing around your blog and this post seems like a great place to comment. I can see that you are monetising your blog and promoting products, but I still get the overwhelming feeling that you want to help people, whether or not they buy.

I certainly value the advice in the letter you’ve posted on here and I’m off to add my stumble friends.

If you’re still stumbling the posts then I’d really appreciate a stumble for this one:
Comfort Zones – Are they really comfortable?

    Cheers, Dan
