Yes, the threat of digital product piracy and theft becomes more potent now. When I wrote how to protect your digital product on March 6, 2007, there was no clear threat at that time.

From what I understand from its sales page, it teaches you to find products that indexed in Google or Yahoo. So your products may be safe if you prevent Google or Yahoo from indexing them.

Here are two tips to prevent your digital products to be indexed by Google or Yahoo:
- Robots.txt
I personally use this measure. But it’s not effective if your buyers manually share your product download link to their friends, or worse, they social bookmark your product download page. - Meta tag
This is more convenient for page usage, by adding a META tag to an HTML page to tell search engine robots not to index the page. However, like robots.txt, it’s not the safest method to protect your digital products.

This comes in line with copy music CD’s, movies, etc. Piracy creates a mess for a lot and it usually hurts the small guys more than the BIG ones. It’s sad that the world can be so screwed up some times.

Digital download theft is a genuine problem which I’ve been writing about for years. It’s a particular problem for internet marketers and I’ve developed a solution with a product called Easy-Download Protector.
It does one thing that no other product provides which is to monitor and log the IP addresses of incoming traffic to your digital product and then it alerts you through it’s unique IP Address Abuse system if it thinks that someone has shared their login and password.
