But before that, let’s understand about Wordpress blog link structure.
Permalinks
Permalinks is the format of your Wordpress blog post links. Every time you publish a blog post, your post will be published based on this permalinks. By default it’s structure is yourdomainname.com/?p=123. Unfortunately this default permalinks is not SEO friendly because search engine robots can read it.

Go to your Wordpress dashboard. Click on Options then Permalinks. Then choose Custom and specify it as /%postname%/, and finally click Update Permalinks Structure.
There you go, now your permalinks mimics your post title. For example this blog post has URL of http://aldianprakoso.com/wordpress-blog-seo-1-minute-easy-quick-fix.

Thanks for the visit and comment, Sunny River. I’m glad you find it useful

This should be one of the first things that you do whenever you’re setting up your new blog.
Probably next most important thing would be to get the wordpress ID number and pop it into Akismet.
I’ve been getting tons, and TONS of spam links from some guy promoting car dealerships. Akismet has caught all of it.
Comment by Aldian on 11 September 2007:
Definitely Evil.
I use Peter’s Custom Anti-spam (captcha plugin), Bad Behavior and Spam Karma in addition to Askimet. They help reducing spams
Comment by James - Visualized.Feel.Abundance on 11 September 2007:
Hey Aldian,
I added a post count between the domain name and post name. Gives a post uniqueness and your post title can be repeated if ever required
Cheers
James
Comment by Zvi on 12 September 2007:
I made the change and I get a 404 page not found.
When I applied the change, there was a message saying “You should update your .htaccess now.”
suggestions?
Thanks
Comment by Aldian on 12 September 2007:
Hey James,
That’s a great idea, too! We can make series of post title that way.
Hi Zvi,
Which version of Wordpress are you using?
Also, where did the message appear? Was it at the Wordpress permalinks dashboard?
Comment by Ben Holmes on 11 October 2007:
Zvi – by changing in ‘midstream’, you’ve got links on Google that are now pointing to none-existent pages. There’s fixes for this, try this one: http://www.deanlee.cn/?p=111&cp=9
Setting up permalinks is best done at the beginning! I’m also a fan of using keyword categories as part of the permalink, and post id to speed access and prevent duplicate names.
Comment by Aldian on 11 October 2007:
Hey Ben,
That’s a great plugin. Thanks for letting us know.
I agree with you, changing permalinks is best done right after installing the blog.
Comment by World Cup Soccer Poster on 18 January 2008:
Thanks. I’m going to try some plug-ins right now.
Comment by Gregg Thurby on 5 April 2008:
Aldian, Hi
This is a great tip – I’d already done this myself just after setting up my blog.
Another simple tip which I only realised after I’d posted several times (Duh!) was that Adsense matches it’s ads to the title of your posting, so make the title fairly specific, otherwise the ads are general and therefore not likely to get clicked…
Great site by the way!
Cheers,
Gregg Thurby

Right after you update/change your Permalink structure in Wordpress go get the Permalink Redirect plugin – this plugin with further optimize your URL structure by eliminating the possibility of duplicate content being indexed from multiple variations of the same URL. This plugin also takes care of the canonical redirect for you.

permalink structure and cleaning up is the best 1st thing to do to SEO your blog. Good post. very informative. I like how you presented it.
Comment by Birdhouse Kits for Kids on 13 November 2008:
I’ve often wondered why the standard install of Wordpress doesn’t already take better care of the basics of SEO, like this post on permalinks and better control of the title tag. It’s not that hard to address, but it’s just one more thing that needs to be dealt with.
Comment by iklangede.com on 14 November 2008:
get more information as well, i love your article with good content and use for me.
Comment by Jeff Paul Scam on 24 January 2009:
It has been amazing to grow any business on the Internet, I need to market strategically to my customers, using a range for tools from content sharing to email marketing, search engine optimization, co-branding, ad buys, and more, to reach your target audience.
Comment by May Tinh Xach Tay on 20 March 2009:
Probably next important thing to do is to get the wordpress ID number and pop it into Akismet. I think Akismet is the best automated spam killer that actually gets better as it learns from the whole community marking new spam comments as spam. It just WORKS.

Do you have a more updated version of this post using the new 2.7+ dashboard? The new 2.7 and 2.8 dashboards look nothing like your example and video tutorials! Also I have been TRYING to implement this on my blog but for some reason I am forced to turn all my links into index.php/%whatever%… feel free to look at my blog and tell me if you have a fix for that
